Waikoloa Canoe Club is seeking candidates for its head coach position. Candidates need to have at least 10 years paddling experience, be energetic and able to work with all ages and experience levels of paddlers, and must be up for the responsibility and challenges the head coach position requires.

Cal Ripken Baseball registration upcoming
Registration for Cal Ripken Minors (ages 8 to 10) will be held Jan. 29-31 and Feb. 5-7 at Old Kona Airport Park’s Mauka dirt field and at Waikoloa Hooko Street Park from 4:30 to 6 p.m.

St. Michael’s tournament Saturday
The St. Michael’s golf tournament will be held Saturday at Makalei Golf Club. Players may participate in either a two-person scramble or best ball, though restrictions apply to the best ball.
The registration fee is $150 for individuals and $250 for teams. Registration will begin at 7 a.m., and play begins at 8 a.m.

Club accepting
new members
West Hawaii Aikido Club is accepting new members.
Aikido is a martial art that concentrates on the development of ki (inner energy) and kokyu (breath power).
Practices are held on Monday and Wednesday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Kona Imin Center in Holualoa.

The Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai will be the topic on this week’s Emily T. Gail Show, which is available under “lineup” at espnhawaii.com and as an iTunes podcast.
Gail will host a talk story show with volunteers, spectators, media and many of the players and their families. Guests include Joe Don Blake and family, Hale and Sally Irwin, Olin Browne, D.A. Weibring, Tom Lehman, Jim Thorpe, Fred Funk, David Frost and John Cook.
Volunteer Bill Verbrugge will discuss his 18 years as a volunteer for the Mitsubishi Electric Championship media center.

Waverider Triathlon Club race March 17
The Waverider Triathlon Club will host the 5K Leprechaun-a-thon and Sham-Walk at 7 a.m. March 17. Registration will run from 6 to 6:40 a.m.
The registration fee will be $12 before March 10 and $15 thereafter.

College-prep
basketball camp June 3
Hawaii Island Hoops will hold its college-prep basketball camp June 3-7 at the Kekuaokalani Gym. Registration is ongoing.
The camp includes Nike SPARQ Training, daily fundamental training workouts, shooting clinics, defensive breakdowns, team offense, individual skills competitions, team tournament and championship game. There will also be a 3-point shootout, free-throw, slam dunk contest, all-star game and awards ceremony.
The camp is open to boys ages 13-19 that are looking to improve their skills and learn a college-style program. The registration fee is $350 and includes instruction from NCAA, NAIA and junior college players and coaches, and evening college-prep seminars on academic requirements, financial aid and athletic recruitment. All meals are included in the registration fee.
